How much do you know about wine? You might have heard of Heartwood and Oak, one of the wine suppliers that can present you with a stash of wine, But before you start tasting wines, there are some things that you might want to know if you don’t want to seem like an amateur even if that is what you are. We want to provide you with some things we believe you should know before tasting wine.
The Aftertaste is Most Important
You might encounter a wine that tastes great when it’s in your mouth but after you swallowed it you have this sour or bitter taste in your mouth that you just don’t like. That’s the aftertaste of wine and critics consider this aftertaste even more important that the taste of the wine itself. If the wine leaves a fine taste in your mouth after you already swallowed it (or spit it, as real wine tasters do) then you have encountered a good quality wine.
The Taste of Wine Changes
Most wines should be drunken in the year that they were produced even though there are some wines that improve as they age. Remember that an aged wine might not taste the same as you remember. So if you’re a fan of wine from a particular year and are so happy that you found the exact same wine that you loved all those years ago, you might be disappointed if you want to have the same wine tasting experience only to find out that the taste of the wine has changed. So if you have a particular type of wine in mind, think not only of the year in which the grapes were created but also the number of years the wine had been bottled before you drank it the first time.
The Difference Between Red and White Wine
You might think that the difference between red and white wine is the kind of grapes that are used to create wine, but this is not the case. It is even the case that some red grapes can be turned into white wines. The real difference relates to the skin of the grapes. Both wines are fermented, but grapes used in white wines are fermented skin, seeds and all. The skin is what creates the red colour of the wine. This is not the case with the grapes that are used for white wine. Those grapes are skinned before fermenting them and also the seeds are removed. They say that the white wines are pressed off their skins and seeds.
The Temperature of the Wine
The wine should be kept and served at a certain temperature. But did you know that the temperature differs for sparkling wine, white wines and rosés? Sparkling wines should be kept on ice until the bottle is finished while other wines are supposed to slowly warm on the table. And don’t make the mistake of thinking that red wine should be served at room temperature; its ideal temperature is -60 to -70 degrees, even cooler than sparkling wines (50-60).
These tips will probably not make you an expert but you might avoid making some basic rookie mistakes.
